In the presence of HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Minister of Transport and Communications (MOTC) and Eng. Hassan Al Thawadi, Qatar Rail Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Qatar Rail signed an agreement to purchase 35 trains for the Doha Metro, taking the total number of trains serving the project to 110.
The additional trains will help increase the capacity of the Metro system, especially when Qatar hosts the 2022 FIFA World Cup that is expected to attract more than a million visitors during the tournament. The trains will also serve the future expansion of the Doha Metro lines, which Qatar Rail intends to carry out after the implementation of Phase 1 of the Metro project.
A joint cooperation agreement was also signed with Mowasalat to provide transport services for metro passengers through their taxi service Karwa, which will give Doha Metro passengers who book a taxi through Karwa, a special discount from and to the Metro stations.
Al-Sulaiti said that Doha Metro provides passengers with a unique transportation opportunity inside Qatar, with a train passing every 86 seconds and a capacity to accommodate more than 1 million passengers during the 2022 World Cup.
He added that this capacity is larger than normal and had not occurred in any of the countries that hosted the World Cup previously, in anticipation of a greater number of fans at the World Cup.
