On the second day of her visit to China, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stressed that cooperation between Washington and Beijing is necessary to finance the fight against climate change.
Yellen said, during her participation in a round table in the presence of a number of experts, that she believes the continuation of cooperation between the United States and China in the field of financing the fight against climate change is necessary, adding that the two countries, as the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases and the largest investors in renewable energies, bear the joint responsibility and ability to lead the way in this field.
She stressed that this is a major area of cooperation between Washington and Beijing, despite the tense bilateral relations between them, considering that climate change is on the list of global challenges, and the United States and China must work together to confront this existential threat.
The US Secretary also indicated the need to focus on financing the fight against climate change effectively, calling on China to support multilateral institutions such as the Green Climate Fund.
It is noteworthy that Yellen’s visit comes a few weeks after a similar visit by Anthony Blinken, her country’s Secretary of State, to China, embodying the desire of the Joe Biden administration to re-establish contact with Beijing, after almost complete isolation that it lived during the past three years due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
China suspended climate talks last summer in protest of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. However, signs of calm began to appear between the two sides, as a US official announced yesterday that John Kerry, the US envoy, will visit Beijing soon to discuss cooperation on climate change.
