Nepal President Appoints New Prime Minister

Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel appointed KP Sharma Oli, leader of the left-wing Communist Party of Nepal (Unified MarxistLeninist) CPN-UML, as the country's new prime minister on Sunday. The president has appointed Sharma Oli, leader of the Nepal Communist Party, as the new prime minister, a statement from the office of the Nepali president said adding that Oli will take the oath of office on Monday. On Friday, the Nepali president called on the political parties with a majority in parliament to form a new coalition government by Sunday. Hours after this call, Oli announced the formation of a coalition government with the support of the opposition Nepali Congress party. Sharma Oli first served as prime minister in 2015, was reappointed in 2018, and was briefly reappointed in 2021 by the Nepali parliament. His predecessor and former coalition ally Pushpa Kamal Dahal lost a vote of confidence in parliament on Friday, just 18 months after taking office, while the country is scheduled to hold general el ections in 2027.
