17 Dead after Under-construction Railway Bridge Collapses in Northeastern India

Seventeen people were killed on Wednesday after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram State in northeastern India.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said, in a post on social media platform X, "under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; atleast 17 workers died: Rescue under progress." The Indian police expressed its concerns that the number of victims might rise, noting that more workers are trapped at the site, as there were between 35-40 workers when the accident occurred.

"Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far... many others are still missing," a police officer said in a statement to Press Trust of India.
