Tokyo, An earthquake measuring 6 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Tuesday near the Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean, south of the Japanese capital, Tokyo. The earthquake occurred near Chichijima Island, 1,000 km south of the capital, at a depth of 50 km, Japan Meteorological Agency reported. No warning was issued about the possibility of a tsunami. Japan is located at the meeting point of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. The Fukushima earthquake, which struck the country in March 2011, was one of the most violent earthquakes that Japan had suffered in recent decades, killing 18,000 people and caused a nuclear leak that was described as the worst since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
