Algeria called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in coordination with the Palestinian mission to the UN in New York, to discuss the latest developments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in light of the escalation of the Israeli occupation forces' (IOF) operations in the West Bank and the continued genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. According to Algerie Presse Service (APS), the meeting is expected to be scheduled by UNSC's current presidency holder Slovenia before the end of the week. It comes amid the severe actions taken against the West Bank that claimed the lives of nearly 700 civilians including more than 150 children since last October and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to the infrastructure while the IOF persist in their crimes against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, raising the death toll to nearly 41,000 martyrs. This meeting is expected to give UNSC members a voice to affirm their support for an immediate ceasefire in Ga za and renew their commitment to the two-state solution as the only way to achieve lasting and just peace in the Middle East, as well as their opposition to the Israeli occupation authorities approach aimed at undermining any hope for the establishment of a Palestinian state and denying the historical rights of the Palestinian people. In June 2023, the UN General Assembly elected Algeria as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for a two-year term. This will mark Algeria's fourth term on the Council, where it will hold one of three African seats. Algeria will be the only country representing the Arab region. Source: Qatar News Agency
