Doha Forum/ Experts Concerned About Securing Data in ‘AI Era’

Doha, - Experts and specialists in technology and cybersecurity have warned of growing concerns about the uses of artificial intelligence (AI) to protect data privacy, noting that the need for data to support various technological innovations and industries increases the risk of misuse that takes place without legal frameworks or specific guidelines.

This came during a discussion session entitled "Securing Data in an AI Driven Era," which was held with the participation of HE President of the National Cybersecurity Agency Engineer Abdulrahman bin Ali Al Farahid Al Maliki; CEO and co-founder of 'Vectara' Business Applications Dr. Amr Awadallah; Executive Coordinator of the Global Governance Innovation Network Nodhara Youssef; Stimson Center; Vice President and Senior Fellow at CCG Mike Liu; and global governance researcher at the United Nations University Center for Policy Research Muzna Siddiqui. The session was moderated by Al Jazeera Broadcaster Rawaa Oger.

Speakers in the discussion session reviewed the various challenges facing ensuring privacy within AI systems, and ways to enhance technical guarantees and ethical considerations in this context, pointing out that the main characteristic of AI is rapid change, which prevents the enactment of legislation or regulatory laws that keep pace with its developments.

They stressed that cybersecurity is considered the primary support for various institutions in achieving their goals without any risks, in addition to providing many solutions to problems related to data privacy breaches.

They also explained that AI was natural and inevitable development in previously developed technologies, but it is considered a dual-use technology, as it can be used to provide unethical and misleading results as well as deceptive information, which underlines the need for specific legal frameworks that contribute to reducing the resulting cyber risks.

During the discussion session, the speakers underscored governing AI, given the wide range of challenges it poses that may affect international peace and security, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the required balance, by achieving optimal benefit from AI technologies in various humanitarian fields.

They stressed the importance of partnership between governments and private sector institutions to benefit from AI technologies and the multiple solutions they provide, and the impact of this in promoting innovation and digital transformation, pointing out the necessity of adopting specific practices, with the aim of securing cyberspace.

The speakers warned of disrupting development due to concerns related to AI, explaining that the confrontation continues between the two parties, as there are those who search for solutions to penetrate and use systems, and there are those who confront these measures and repel any attack on them.

They called on governments and concerned parties to set specific precautions for the uses of AI, and to regulate work in this field in accordance with basic legal frameworks and legislation, preventing accidents resulting from the misuse of these systems.
