The Nobel Peace Prize Committee in Norway announced today that the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo has won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to achieve a world free from nuclear weapons. According to the committee, following the atomic bombings in August 1945, a global movement emerged, dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. Members of Nihon Hidankyo, also known as Hibakusha, are survivors of the only nuclear bombs used in warfare, dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These individuals have devoted their lives to advocating for a nuclear-free world. The committee expressed in its statement that Hibakusha are receiving the Peace Prize for their efforts to prevent the future use of nuclear weapons, emphasizing that their testimonies serve as powerful reminders of the unthinkable devastation caused by these weapons. The committee added that the organizations prize aims to honor all survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki at omic bombs, who, despite physical suffering and painful memories, chose to channel their experiences into spreading hope and promoting peace.
