NIHR: Inmates end hunger strike following measures to improve services

Inmates at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre (Jau) yesterday (September11) ended their hunger strike after beginning to apply measures to improve services offered to them, announced the National Institution of Human Rights (NIHR).

A NIHR team conducted the third field visit to inmates at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre in Jau, where it met officials and a number of inmates.

The inmates have started eating their meals, noting the improvement of certain services, said the NIHR statement, adding that other services needed some time to process or legislative action.

In the statement, the human rights institution said that a number of inmates told the visiting team that hours had been reorganized and outdoor time and phone numbers allowed to be contact have been increased.

Inmates gave comments related to the development of healthcare at the centre, which were documented by the team and will be presented to the relevant authorities in Government hospitals.

The institution indicated that it will follow up on all matters related to the rights of inmates in light of the end of the hunger strike, pledging to consider all their requests to ensure that they enjoy their rights stipulated in national legislation and relevant international standards.
