Ombuds Office, PDRC welcome the royal pardon decree

Manama, The General Secretariat for Grievances and the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC) welcomed the royal decree issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa pardoning 1584 inmates, on the occasion of His Majesty's silver jubilee accession to the throne and in conjunction with the celebrations of the blessed Eid Al-Fitr. Ghada Hameed Habib, the Ombudswoman and Chairperson of the PDRC, stated that the royal decree aligns with a strategy to promote the status of human rights. She said that the royal pardon culminated the efforts of entities concerned with the conditions of inmates, including the Ministry of Interior and which implemented initiatives expanding alternative measures and penalties and the open prisons project. The ministry's role complements the efforts of other entities in the judiciary and national reconciliation institutions, she added. Habib expressed her confidence in realising the numerous positive outcomes of this royal decree, especially in terms of its aim to enh ance human rights values and standards in Bahrain and reintegrating pardoned inmates into society. The Ombudswoman said this step contributed to solidifying Bahrain's status as an Arab and regional model in promoting peaceful coexistence, and social harmony, and advancing human development.
