Geneva, Bahrain's parliamentary group, represented by Dalal Jassim Al Zayed, Shura Council member, Dr. Bassam Ismail Al Binmohammed, Shura Council member, and MP Dr. Mahdi Abdulaziz Al Showaikh, participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights at the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Switzerland. The committee discussed a draft resolution on "The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Democracy, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law," along with an explanatory note submitted by the project rapporteurs. Bahrain's parliamentary group, among 26 parliaments, proposed a number of amendments to the draft, emphasising the importance of addressing technological gaps to ensure fairness and equality in benefiting from AI advancements. The group highlighted that international cooperation can help share expertise and best practices, enhancing policy effectiveness and solving common challenges. They also highlighted that proper education and training can pre pare individuals to adapt to AI's opportunities and challenges, further advancing innovation. The group called for adherence to ethical and cultural dimensions in AI development, reflecting human values and promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among cultures. They also underlined the need for legal mechanisms to monitor AI's impact on elections and protect democracy from misinformation, which could undermine voter confidence and transparency. The group emphasised the necessity of effective laws to combat manipulation and safeguard democratic integrity, ensuring the fairness of elections and public trust in the democratic process.
