Qatar Participates in Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity Extraordinary Session, ARFREE

The extraordinary session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity kicked off on Sunday in the Arab League headquarters, with the Arab Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ARFREE) held on its sidelines.

HE President of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Chair of the Executive Office of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari represented the State of Qatar in the session and the forum, with the extraordinary session discussing issues relating to the Arab energy sector, most notably the agreements on the Arab Common Market for Electricity.

In a speech on the occasion, HE Kahramaa President said that the State of Qatar welcomes the developments on the two agreements on the Arab Common Market for Electricity, in addition to their passing in the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, assigning the Councils secretariat with presentation them to the Economic and Social Council of the Arab League and the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, in preparation for the agreements' entry into force, effective after their signing.

During the opening of the session, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Ghiet stated that this meeting sets forth the beginning of a new phase in the process of establishing the Arab Common Market for Electricity, expressing his appreciation for all sincere efforts in this regard, stressing that upon completion, the Arab Common Market for Electricity would be the largest Arab integration implemented project, only second to the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, effective 2005.

Aboul Ghiet added that it represents another important step towards achieving Arab integration at all levels, given electricity's great importance in all aspects of economic activity.

The Arab League Secretary-General said that the Arab region possesses exceptional resources that would make it a global source of clean energy in the future, just as it was and still is an important source of fossil energy.
