The Grand Mufti confirms the permissibility of sacrificing fattened calves

Jerusalem - Together - The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories, the preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, confirmed the fatwa permissible for sacrificing fattened calves. The Mufti stated in a press statement today, Monday, that the sacrifice is one of the rituals of Islam, proven by the text of the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah, and it is from livestock that include camels, cows, and sheep, and it has conditions detailed in the books of Islamic jurisprudence, including that it is free from defects, and that it reaches the specified age according to its type. He explained that the nation's scholars differed regarding the permissibility of sacrificing fattened animals that have not reached the age specified for their type, and the majority of jurists prohibit sacrificing animals that have not reached the age of sacrifice, even if they have plenty of meat, taking into account the apparent meaning of the texts that stipulated age. Some of the followers, such as Al-Awza'i, Ata', and some later scholars, permitted the sacrifice of fattened calves, even if they had not reached the specified age, based on the wisdom of the ruling on determining the age of sacrifice, which is the abundance of meat for the poor and needy. He pointed out that the Supreme Fatwa Council, in its Resolution No. 1/13 dated 6/19/1997, permitted, if necessary and to avoid embarrassment, the sacrifice of fattened calves, as long as they could not be distinguished if placed among non-fattened ones. Stressing that one of the rulings of the sacrifice is providing good, good and plentiful meat to the poor. The Grand Mufti stressed that adopting the permissibility of sacrificing fattened calves also facilitates the sacrifice for the sacrificer by eliminating the embarrassment that many people experience as a result of the trouble of searching for specific ages for calves in their markets, especially when the supply is limited, as it is difficult in our time to obtain calves that are more than two years old for the pu rpose of Sacrifice: Most calf breeders market them before they reach one year of age, after fattening, which causes them to weigh more than those of two-year-old calves if they remained grazing while sleeping.
