Typhoon Lan Forces Suspension of Flight and Train Services in Japan

Central Japan Railway Co. announced that all services on the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train line between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka stations will be cancelled Tuesday Aug. 15, due to the approach of Typhoon Lan, which is expected to hit central and western regions of Japan.

Meanwhile, West Japan Railway Co. revealed that bullet train line will be suspended on Aug. 15 between Shin-Osaka and Okayama stations.

For its part, the Japan Airlines Co. announced the cancellation of 19 flights today, including flights to and from Itami Airport in western Japan. It is also expected to cancel 240 flights on Tuesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency clarified that Typhoon Lan was moving slowly to the northwestern areas, about 380 kilometers south of Hachijojima Island. It is accompanied by a central atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals. It is packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of up to 198 kilometers per hour.

It is expected that the storm will lead to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall on the eastern and western coasts of the Pacific Ocean in Japan,which could result in mudslides and river flooding.
