UN Stresses Need to Adhere to Collective Responsibility to Support, Assist Refugees

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the necessity of adhering to the collective responsibility to help and welcome refugees, and to support their human rights, including the right to seek asylum, and also the responsibility to maintain the integrity of the refugee protection and conflict settlement system, so that those forced to leave their communities can return home. This came in his message on the occasion of World Refugee Day, which is an occasion intended to praise their strength and courage, and to intensify efforts to protect refugees and support them in every step they take in their journey. Guterres added that refugees are most in need of global solidarity and the ability to rebuild the components of their lives, in a way that preserves their dignity, and pointed out that refugees, when given the opportunity, make significant contributions to their host societies, but they need to make room for them to benefit from equal opportunities, jobs, housing and health care. T he Secretary-General underline the importance of providing quality education for young refugees to achieve their dreams, and said that host countries, most of which are low- or middle-income countries, need support and resources to fully integrate refugees into societies and economies.
