New York, Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, participated in the high-level ministerial meeting on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed affirmed Bahrain's support for regional and international efforts aimed at disarming nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, reducing their serious threats to international peace and security, and saving humanity and future generations from their catastrophic humanitarian, economic, and environmental consequences. The undersecretary called for the international community to assume its responsibilities in ridding the Middle East region and the world of nuclear weapons, especially with increasing tensions, armed conflicts, and fears of the outbreak of a regional or global nuclear war. Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed highlighted Bah rain's commitment to implement international treaties concerning the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, nuclear safety and security, the comprehensive ban on nuclear tests, and the prevention of nuclear terrorism. He also emphasised the importance of close collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure that nations fulfil their obligations to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy for sustainable development, in alignment with the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law aimed at fostering global peace and security. The undersecretary affirmed that Bahrain aspires, through its participation in the UN meetings and international forums, to enhancing diplomatic dialogue for conflict resolution and preventing arms races. He also highlighted Bahrain's role in global efforts to eliminate nuclear and mass destruction weapons, aiming for a more secure, peaceful, and stable future.
