Manama, Bader Hood Al Mahmood, Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, emphasised the importance of safety in maritime navigation. He noted that over 90% of essential goods and luxuries are transported by sea, making the safety of maritime navigation and workers in this sector a critical priority. Marking World Maritime Day, observed on September 26 under the theme "Navigating the Future: Safety First!" represents the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) commitment to enhancing maritime safety and security while protecting the marine environment and keeping pace with rapid technological advancements in this sector. He highlighted Bahrain's commitment to adopting international best practices to enhance safety and protect the marine environment. Bahrain has joined key IMO conventions, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which marks its 50th anniversary this year. Bahrain's Ports and Maritime Af fairs actively implement these conventions through rigorous inspections of both Bahraini and foreign vessels by qualified and highly trained maritime inspectors, the undersecretary added. He noted that since joining the IMO, Bahrain has actively contributed to advancing the organisation's objectives by ratifying and implementing key international maritime agreements. This commitment is upheld by a dedicated national team tasked with ensuring inspections and compliance. Al Mahmood commended the IMO's global efforts in safeguarding maritime navigation, protecting seafarers, and assisting governments in establishing maritime legislative frameworks in line with international standards. He noted the IMO's role in forging agreements and organising workshops to train and develop maritime professionals. Source: Bahrain News Agency
